Spending time in nature improves concentration. Walking through nature exposes you to "inherently fascinating stimuli" that allow directed attention to rest and restore.

The Deep Work Limit

For a novice, about one hour a day of intense concentration is the limit. For experts, this expands to four hours—but rarely more. Use this knowledge to protect your deep work hours ruthlessly.

On Digital Distraction

The constant switching from low-stimuli/high-value activities to high-stimuli/low-value activities teaches your brain to never tolerate an absence of novelty. Social media services are products developed by private companies, designed to capture and sell your attention to advertisers.

To succeed with deep work, rewire your brain to be comfortable resisting distracting stimuli. If every moment of boredom is relieved with a smartphone glance, your brain isn't ready for deep work.

Key Insight

Human beings are at their best when immersed deeply in something challenging. Jobs are easier to enjoy than free time because they have built-in goals, feedback rules, and challenges that encourage concentration.
